Fired on the 4th of July
Are you heading back to work yet?
Worried about going back before you're ready?
Don't want to get fired for refusing?
Have some info on that in just a sec.
In my 30s, well into a reasonably successful career, I was growing bored and thought about becoming a lawyer.
This lawyer thing may have been the beginning of my Hero's Journey ...
... if you don't know about that,x it's the life's work of Joseph Campbell.
Here are few of his quotes about it...
"I don't believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive."
"I think the person who takes a job in order to live - that is to say, for the money - has turned himself into a slave."
"We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us." After enrolling in the LSAT prep course,I quickly learned something really useful: No way was I ever going to be a lawyer. This was not the life that was waiting for me. Here's the thing.. The LSAT prep was not cheap.
One night, on the phone with my friend Bill, I was bemoaning what I thought was a bit of a fail or dumb move and said,
"I spent over $1000 on a class only to learn I didn't want to be a lawyer." I probably ended that sentence with a discouraged huff. Bill was at least 20 years older than me and smart as all get out. He replied... "No! You did something wise. Something most people spend their whole lives and don't figure out. Trust me, you'll be glad you made this "mistake" for the rest of your life here's why..." I write about this and train on it in Job Hunt School which is loading now and coming soon. Get on the interest list here. He was right, by the way. I never regretted my "dumb" move after he shared his wisdom. Since I did not become a lawyer, here's a great article (written by an actual lawyer.) It's jam-packed like a jar of new pickles with good legal-y info for you and it covers common questions about returning to work during the COVID19 crazy-time. Check it at the top of my list of COVID19 resources here. or the LinkedIn post version below.
